Start Planning for Fall Now – Yes, You’re Reading this Right

With the unbearable heat outside and our air-conditioning units working overtime, it’s difficult to even consider the fact that fall will officially start in less than 2 months. This is the perfect time to start preparing and planning for the fall weather to come. Make sure your lawn is ready for the change of season with these tips from Simply Green Lawn Care in Lilburn, GA.

  • Fallen Leaf Aerate Your Fescue Lawn – Aerating now will make it so that water, and fertilizer can easily reach the grass’s roots. Taking action now will make your future Fescue lawn healthier and more vibrant.
  • Reseeding – The hot Georgia summers really take its tole on our turf. This means thatFescue lawns require reseeding.
  • Rake the Leaves – This is one of the most important aspects of keeping your turf healthy in the cooler months. Your lawn need nutrients from the sun to thrive, but if it is covered by a dense layer of wet leaves it is more susceptible to turf diseases.
  • Weed Control – Now is the time to apply a winter pre-emergence to your warm season turf (Bermuda and Zoysia) to help prevent Poa-annua and other winter weeds. Get on top of the weeds now, and it wont prove to be as big of an issue later.
    • Do not apply weed control for the next 2 months to Fescue . Most herbicides will damage new fescue seedlings. Wait until late November or early December to use a selective herbicide to target treat any broadleaf weeds you may have in your lawn. Be sure to read and follow the label!
  • Great Time to Fertilize – When you fertilize in the fall, you fertilize for the future. This is a great time of year to prepare your yard for a successful growing season.
    • For Fescue, apply a starter fertilizer and correct low soil pH.
    • For warm season turf (Bermuda and Zoysia), help your lawn prepare for the colder months by applying a potassium fertilizer for the roots .
  • Mow Low -Before you re-seed mow your Fescue lawn short about 2”, remove clippings and leaves. This will help ensure your seed reaches the soil. Once you reseed do not mow your Fescue lawn for 2-3 weeks. Allow the seedling to develop roots so when you do mow your mower does not pull up the need seedlings. Best mowing height is 3” to 3.5” for the winter.
    • Allow your warm season lawn (Bermuda and Zoysia) to go dormant with a mowing height of 1.5” to  2” .

Summer Lawn Care DON’TS

simply green leaf header

In the past few weeks we have gone from warm days and cool nights, to scorching days and warm Rays of Sunnights. This overexposure of heat to can be devastating to your grass’ health, and unless you can block the sun’s rays, there isn’t much you can do about the heat’s damage to your lawn! A lush carpet of green is easy to attain as long as you avoid a few common stresses on your lawn, like lack of water and improper mowing. Unfortunately we can’t fix the heat (we wish we could!), but Simply Green Lawn Care can do something about the other threats to your lawn’s wellbeing. Here are several tips on what NOT to do when caring for a lawn this summer!

  • Cutting With a Dull Blade- If your lawn mower’s blade isn’t sharp, you’ll end up with torn or bruised shoots. This can lead to your lawn turning gray and then brown, leaving it defenseless against disease and pests. You should regularly sharpen your lawn mower’s blades about twice per season. If your lawn mower appears to be dragging or flattening the grass instead of swiftly cutting it, your blades may be due for a sharpening! Learn how to sharpen a lawn mower blade here!
  • Bagging Lawn Clippings – If you are mowing at the correct height every 7 days, you do not need to catch your grass clippings. Clippings contain beneficial nutrients and may contribute as much as 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet.
  • Mowing In One Direction – Changing your mowing direction each time you mow is healthy for your lawn! This ensures a more even cut and grass blades will be less likely to develop into a set pattern.
  • Trim Turf Too Short – Leaving grass longer helps it process light and water while developing a healthy root system, which in turn leads to a fuller, more appealing lawn.
  • Lack of Water – If water is not finding its way to your lawn naturally, bring the water yourself! This is the time of year to start deep root watering, but how do you accomplish that? Lawns need an inch of water a week. Saturate all of the grass at once and it will run off; deliver too little and it will never reach the roots. Give grass a third of an inch of water three times a week in the morning.

Celebrate Arbor Day in 9 Easy Steps!

simply green leaf header

It’s hard not to think about making the earth around us a little better on a week like this. Earth planting trees Day was last Friday, and Arbor Day is today! There are many different ways to make our homes and communities a little greener, but one simple way to do your part is by planting a tree. But before you run out and plant a forest of trees in your front yard, there are a few things to consider.

Simply Green Lawn Care has these easy-to-follow steps for planting a tree:

  1. Select a good time of year. Late spring and early summer are, generally speaking, not good times of year to plant trees. Now, in the months of April and May, is the best time to go out and
  2. Be careful where you dig. Most yards nowadays have buried cables and lines that run to your house. So be cautious when digging so you don’t end up without internet for a few days.
  3. Find a suitable tree for your area. Different trees grow better in different regions. For instance, peach trees thrive in the Georgia soil and climate. Do a little research before planting something that may not do well in your region.
  4. Select a good location. Remember, this tree will grow. Take that into account when choosing a spot. Plant away from your house and power lines, the tree should be able to grow unobstructed.
  5. Dig a hole 4-5 times the width of the root ball.
    1. Big enough to work with.
    2. Roots need broken up soil to spread.
    3. The point where tree comes out of the ground should be slightly higher (1/4 to a 1/2 inch) than the rest to avoid over watering.
  6. Time to plant! Place the tree, gently, in the hole you just dug, and check to make sure it doesn’t sit too deep or too shallow
  7. If the soil you are using is not rich, mix some compost in when filling the hole.
  8. Use stakes if necessary for the first year or so.
  9. Pat yourself on the back, you just added that much more oxygen and greenery to the world!

Don’t Let Excessive Rain Ruin Your Lawn

simply green leaf header

As the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers. But sometimes those showers can get a littleRain on Leaf excessive this time of year, and though water is essential to the health of your lawn, too much of it can do damage too. Many homeowners spend a lot of time and effort to turn their lawns into something beautiful they can enjoy. Making a beautiful lawn and landscape isn’t something that can be tackled in a weekend though. It takes time, and seeing all of that work washed away can be difficult. Simply Green Lawn Care, located in Lilburn, GA, understands the work put in by homeowners on a weekly basis. So we have compiled a list of steps to help restore your turf back to its original glory.

Tips for restoring your turf after a flood

  1. After the flooding subsides, give the water time to fully absorb into the ground. This might take 2 or 3 weeks.
  2. During this time, and for a time after, minimize the amount of foot traffic on your lawn. The turf is in a very vulnerable state right now, and susceptible to damage.
  3. Remove debris. This will allow the turf to breath and absorb more sunlight, and will also give you the opportunity to move forward with whatever might be needed.
  4. Feed you lawn. If the flood was bad enough, it will have washed away much of the nutrients your lawn needs to flourish. You will need to replenish those nutrients, and if you are unsure how to go about doing that, a professional lawn care company can help.
  5. Once your turf begins to recover, keep feeding it with fertilizer to rebuild those strong roots!

Everything a Novice Gardener Needs to Know

simply green leaf header

Tis the season to dust off those gardening tools and to get our hands a little dirty. This time of year is trowel in soilsomething avid gardeners dream about all year until it comes back. This year, like years before, many people will try their hand at gardening for the first time. Like anything new, we first need to begin with the basics. Having a solid understanding of the fundamentals of gardening will give you a great foundation to build from for years to come. Simply Green Lawn Care located around Atlanta, GA has these steps to follow to get you playing in the dirt this spring!

  • Pick a location – For the most part, plants are going to need 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day to yield the best results. Scope out your yard, and see what parts receive a consistent amount of sun everyday. Also, consider proximity when selecting a location to start. Is there a source of water near by? Easy access from the house for cooking? Take some time for this part of the process, it is very difficult to change locations once you’ve planted.
  • Get your supplies – Decide what supplies you are going to need. If you are just starting out, you really don’t need anything fancy, just a few basic supplies like a trowel, gloves, soil, pots (if doing a container garden), shovel and pruners.
  • What will you grow?! – This is where the fun really starts to happen. Make a visit your local nursery, or anywhere that provides gardening essentials. Take your time, walk through the aisles of vegetables, herbs and flowers and pick what you like! Ask yourself questions depending on what you are planting. What will I eat the most of? What textures look good next to one another (flowers or decorative plants)? If you want a more uncommon plant like an heirloom variety, think about looking at the seeds section. It often provides a wider variety of plants.
  • Design – It’s up to you! Whatever you envision for your garden, go for it! Make sure to look up a few basic rules of gardening as guidelines while planting, especially when dealing with ornamentals, an aesthetic design guide can really help.
  • Maintain – Once you’ve gone through the above steps, all that’s left to do is maintain your garden and reap the rewards! But what is needed to keep your garden at optimal health?
    • Water your plants regularly. Plants require a good deal of water to survive. A good rule of thumb is to stick your finger in the soil; if it is dry, make sure to give them a bit of water. Also, water your plants at the beginning of the day if possible. This will allow the sun the dry of the leaves, and help avoid fungal diseases caused by moisture. If you notice that some of your leaves are beginning to brown, take your pruning shears and cut it at the base.
    • Keep the weeds out! Check your garden everyday for encroaching weeds. Pick them and discard away from your garden.
    • Expect pests. Insects and critters are almost always a sure issue, and there are many different methods for dealing with the issue.
    • Last, but not least, enjoy it! Gardening is a really great way to get outdoors and relieve from stress from the day. Happy gardening!

It’s Time to Lower the Blades

simply green leaf header

The first day of spring is just a couple of days away, and already we have been experiencing some of the lawn caresigns of the season in recent weeks. We love this time of year at Simply Green Lawn Care, located in Lilburn, GA. Flowers are in bloom and the sun is shining. We wrote recently about about our spring lawn care checklist, but another thing we should be paying attention to is the length we are cutting our grass. Now is the time to scalp those lawns!

So how do you scalp a lawn properly, and why?

  • Firstly, make sure you have warm season grass, like bermuda or zoysia. Cool season grasses, like fescue, will not benefit from cutting it shorter this time of year.
  • Before you start, make sure all of the leftover frost from winter is gone (this will not be a problem this year). If frost still exists, you could actually do more harm than good.
  • You might wonder, just how short you need to cut for it to be considered scalping. Put your mowing blades on its lowest level to efficiently scalp your lawn.
  • The act of scalping your lawn removes dry and dormant turf, and can actually help prevent weed problems during the coming months.
