In today’s service spotlight, we are covering Tree and Shrub Care! Landscape plants, unlike lawns, mature slowly often over the course of many years.  Damage or malnutrition can sometimes take a growing season or more to correct. For this reason it is best to treat landscape plants proactively to ensure that they will grow to their full potential. Simply Green Lawn Care Plus provides an annual tree and shrub care plan to help your landscape plants thrive at your home.

Get Your Lawn Ready For Fall

By Bartosz Bąk

The cooler weather of approaching fall makes it a great time to improve the appearance of your Atlanta, GA lawn. You’ll find it’s one of the best times of year to fertilize, control weeds, seed and carry out core aeration on lawns, particularly tall fescue. If your grass is looking a little wilted after summer or moss and thatch is becoming a problem on the lawn, then a major fall rescue operation should be put in place to ensure it recovers before next summer’s warm weather arrives.

Fall Treatments for Your Georgia Lawn

Some of the principal lawn treatments to consider this fall are:

  • Seeding – If your tall fescue lawn is patchy and bare in places then seeding should be one of the first jobs you carry out this fall. Sow seed onto prepared ground to a depth of up to 1/2 inch, you should use around five pounds of seed to every 1,000 square feet of soil for over-seeding and you should expect germination within 14 days. Fall is a great time to sow tall fescue seed as the cooler weather encourages development of a strong root system
  • Core Aeration – This will reduce thatch and help loosen the soil and improve drainage. It involves pulling plugs of soil from the lawn, ideally using some form of aerating product. Simply punching holes into the grass will actually increase compaction of soil over a period of time, so should be avoided. If you haven’t over-seeded, mid-September is a great time of year to think about aerating the lawn.
  • Fertilization – Once any seedlings have germinated and any aeration to the lawn has been carried out, the final fall task to keep your lawn looking great is fertilization. October is a great time of year to fertilize a tall fescue lawn and will help maintain and strengthen grass roots and prevent cold weather damage, while a starter fertilizer will help newly germinated seeds to create vigorous root systems.

It’s important to treat your lawn as early as possible in fall, particularly if you plan to seed areas of grass. Grass is easily damaged during colder spells, so getting your Atlanta, Georgia tall fescue lawn in great condition through fall is an important garden chore. If you don’t have time, call Simply Green at 770 923-0387 and our professionals can soon sort out your lawn for winter, ensuring it’s lush and in great condition.

Work Less On Your Lawn

94H

We know that you take pride in your lawn and work hard to make sure it’s green, free of weeds and looking HOA approved but it’s a ton of work! After a long week at work, the last thing you want to do is lawn work all weekend. What if we told you that you could cut down that time spent?

In today’s post, we have put together a few great tips on cutting back on the hours you spend in your lawn.

1. Let your grass grow

We don’t mean “never cut your grass” but cutting your grass too short can actual cause more work for you. The shorter you but it the easier it is for weeds to grow. This means cutting your grass less can prevent time spent on your lawn.

2. Chill out on the fertilizer:

It’s true that fertilizing your lawn can give it great color and growth but you can over do it. Too much fertilizer can harm your grass. If you aren’t sure about how or when to fertilize, contact our team and we can help you figure out the next steps!

3. Know your grass

Knowing what type of grass you have will give you an idea of how high-mantinance it can be. Making a change on the type of grass you have could help cut down on the maintenance.

Of course one way to take all the hard work off your plate is to simply hand it over to a professional. At Simply Green Lawn Care we can help you get the type of lawn you want! Mowing #TurfTips

simply green leaf header

lawnCare1Happy August! With high heats still continuing and scattered storms throughout the summer, your grass is most likely growing at an incredible pace. Do you feel like you need to mow every day? This could mean that you aren’t mowing the most effective way possible. Did you know? There is an actual “Art of Mowing”. In today’s post, we have included a few #trustytips to help you make the most out of mowing your lawn.

Cut your lawn and try to avoid tearing your grass.  Mower blades must be sharp or instead of cutting your lawn you will be tearing your lawn. If your leaf blades have brown tips 2-3 days after you mow, could be your mower blades need to be sharpened.

Remember it’s all about the “Rule of thirds.” Mow your lawn at least every 7 days in the growing season. Never mow more than one-third of the grass leaf at a time.

To catch or not to catch? If you are mowing at the correct height every 7 days, you do not need to catch your grass clippings. Clippings contain beneficial nutrients for your lawn and do not build harmful thatch.

Change it up! Change your mowing direction each time you mow. This ensures a more even cut and grass blades will be less likely to develop into a set pattern.

Mowing Height matters. Mowing height is extremely important. Know your grass type and mow at the correct height, depending on the time of the year.

How to Combat a Weed Infested Lawn

simply green leaf header

aerationAre weeds marring your otherwise beautiful lawn this summer? Simply Green Lawn Care can help. Our turf care experts manage unsightly weeds with several techniques and high quality products.

  • Post-emergents: These products control existing weeds and may be used as spot treatment during the summer months.
  • Pre-emergents:  Pre-emergents prevent weeds from appearing in your lawn. These products are typically applied in the spring, fall, and winter and are not a recommended treatment during summertime.
  • Fertilizer: By encouraging a healthy, lush lawn, fertilizer stifles weeds and other unwanted growth. The summer months are the ideal time for controlled release fertilization.
  • Core Aeration: As with fertilization, aeration encourages a healthy lawn. By removing small soil cores from your lawn, aeration allows water, oxygen, and nutrients to flow deep to the roots of the turf. Your lawn’s subsequent growth will discourage weeds from attempting to budge in.

Summer Lawn Care Tips

simply green leaf header

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The rain your turf has endured has finally subsided a bit here in Atlanta.  The past couple of months you were thrilled that we saw regularly scheduled weekend showers to water your lawn but now it’s high and intense heat.  The heat is here just in time to host your summer get-togethers.  Now that the rain has subsided, is your lawn ready to withstand the little league team parties, sack races and barbeques?

Maintaining the lawn is an ongoing process. Summer turf care in Atlanta certainly requires us to have patience. Now that temperatures will be into the 90’s routinely, the color may fade and it will take longer for the turf to recover from lawn games and traffic.

Keep these simple Turf Tips in mind for your Atlanta lawn:

  • Water early and water deeply (about 1 inch).  If you water later in the day a small amount, most of the water will just evaporate.  DIY TIP: repurpose a clean tuna can as a water gauge while you’re watering.  When you have an inch of water in it, you’ve watered adequately.
  • Raise your mower blade.  Taller grass is more heat and drought tolerant.
  • Resist the urge to fertilize during these high temperatures. You might burn your lawn.
  • Consider stepping stones for high traffic areas.
  • Mulch an area for use as a designated pet area. It should reduce those familiar brown spots.

Following these Turf Tips can save you time and money- keeping you in the green. If you have any questions or need any advice on summer lawn care – contact us today at 770-923-0387, or click here to request a FREE estimate. Be sure to leave a review with us on Yelp and follow along on Facebook and Twitter!
